Irish Folklore - Message of the Butterflies

There are lots of different versions of myths around butterflies and links with Ireland. It is said that different colour butterflies can carry different meanings. Yellow meaning success will be yours, black and brown ones mean inconveniences in your life will occur.

The most common myth associated with the butterfly is that it represents the soul. Some elements of Irish folklore refer to butterflies as ‘souls of the dead’, meaning that they can cross into the ‘Otherworld’. You can see why people believe this with the transformation of the caterpillar into a butterfly. This shows a changing of states, life to death, a symbol of creation and transformation. It’s quite a nice way to see these beautiful creatures!

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun, and find your shoulder to light on

To bring you luck, happiness and riches today, tomorrow and beyond [khandro]
